Many parents enrol their child in NEET coaching as soon as Class 10 ends, because “everyone else is doing it”. For some students this is the right move. For others, starting before they are ready leads to stress, low confidence and wasted fees.
Readiness is not about marks alone. It is about interest, foundations, habits and the ability to handle pressure. Here are seven signs to check before you decide.
Biology and medicine are their own choice
Class 10 science basics are clear
Can study alone for 1–2 focused hours
Reads textbooks with ease
A low mark doesn’t make them give up
Can balance school and extra study
Regular sleep, meals, limited screens
| Sign | A simple check |
|---|---|
| 1. Real interest | Ask why they want to study medicine. Listen for their own reasons, not only “you want me to”. |
| 2. Science base | Ask them to explain a Class 10 topic, such as photosynthesis, in their own words. |
| 3. Self-study | Watch a weekend: can they study for an hour without constant breaks or the phone? |
| 4. Textbook reading | Ask them to read a page of a science textbook and summarise it in a few lines. |
| 5. Bounces back | Recall their reaction to a low mark. Did they try again, or give up on the subject? |
| 6. Time sense | Do they finish school homework on time without reminders? |
| 7. Healthy routine | Check their sleep time and daily screen time for one week. |
No student is perfect. What matters is how many signs are already present, and whether the missing ones can be built.
Of the seven signs, the first is the most important. A student who truly wants to become a doctor will build the other six. A student studying only to meet family expectations may struggle even with all the others. Talk openly with your child, and respect their answer.
Most students start in Inter 1st year. Students with strong foundations can benefit from starting earlier with a foundation programme.
Good marks help, but also check interest, self-study habits and how they handle setbacks.
Yes. With steady practice, students can adapt to the textbook language. NEET can also be written in several Indian languages; check the official bulletin.
Give them time to explore. Talking to doctors and reading about the profession helps them decide honestly.
Habits like focus and routine can improve in weeks. Science foundations take a little longer but respond well to a structured course.
The Academy offers a readiness discussion for parents and students, and foundation programmes from 6th to 10th class, built on the four-pillar system: BRAIN-X, Focussed Attention-X, Memory-X and Exam-X.
