JEE Main vs Advanced: What Inter Students in Telangana and AP Must Know
Every year, thousands of Inter MPC students in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh dream of an IIT or NIT seat. Yet many are confused about the two JEE exams: which one leads where, when each is held, and how to prepare for both alongside Inter board exams.
This blog explains the difference in simple words, shows the full path from Inter to IIT and NIT, and gives you a two-year plan that fits the Inter calendar.
The path from Inter to IIT and NIT
JEE Main is the first step for everyone. It decides admission to NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded institutes, and it also decides who can write JEE Advanced, the exam for the IITs.
So JEE Main is both a destination and a gateway. Students in Telangana and AP also have a third route: TS EAPCET or AP EAPCET for state engineering colleges, which is a separate exam.
JEE Main and JEE Advanced side by side
| Feature | JEE Main | JEE Advanced |
|---|---|---|
| Conducted by | National Testing Agency (NTA) | One of the IITs, in rotation each year |
| Purpose | Admission to NITs, IIITs, GFTIs; qualifying exam for Advanced | Admission to the IITs |
| Who can write | Students who have passed or are appearing in Class 12 with PCM | Only the top 2,50,000 in JEE Main |
| When | Twice a year: January and April; the better score counts | Once a year, after JEE Main (usually May) |
| Paper | One paper, 3 hours: 75 questions, 300 marks (25 per subject) | Two compulsory papers, 3 hours each |
| Question types | MCQs and numerical answers; +4 for correct, −1 for wrong | Varied: single and multiple correct, numerical, matching; the pattern can change each year |
| Attempts | As per the NTA bulletin each year | Maximum two, in consecutive years |
| Nature | Speed and accuracy on core concepts | Depth: several concepts in one question |
One preparation, two exams
You do not need two separate preparations. The syllabus of both exams is built on the same Class 11 and 12 concepts. The difference is depth and speed.
- Build depth first. If you prepare concepts to Advanced level, JEE Main becomes easier. The reverse is not true.
- Practise speed separately. Write timed JEE Main mocks regularly, because Main rewards quick, accurate solving.
- Respect NCERT Chemistry. Many Main questions come straight from NCERT lines, especially in Inorganic Chemistry.
- Do not ignore boards. Inter marks matter for eligibility and admission rules, and board preparation strengthens your basics.
A two-year plan that fits the Inter calendar
In Telangana and AP, Inter board exams fall between the two JEE Main sessions. Plan for this early so the board months do not break your JEE rhythm.
- Inter 1st year: build strong concepts in all three subjects; solve JEE-level problems from the start.
- June to December of 2nd year: complete the full syllabus and start full JEE Main mocks.
- January: write JEE Main Session 1. Treat it as a real attempt, not a trial.
- February–March: focus on board exams, with short daily JEE revision.
- April and May: JEE Main Session 2, then full focus on JEE Advanced if you qualify.
This plan uses the Focussed Attention-X and Exam-X pillars: one clear goal for each phase, and regular testing to stay exam-ready.

Frequently asked questions
No. You must first rank within the top 2,50,000 in JEE Main to become eligible for JEE Advanced.
The better of your two session scores is used for your rank.
Yes. NIT, IIIT and GFTI admissions are based on JEE Main rank through central counselling, subject to the eligibility rules of that year.
EAPCET is based largely on the Inter syllabus, so strong JEE and board preparation covers most of it. Practise its pattern with a few mocks before the exam.
Inter 1st year is the ideal start. Students who build foundations in 8th to 10th class have an even stronger advantage.
